Start of week eight... [15 Dec 2005|06:55pm]

Goal finally reached! Haven't been under 300 for the last four years. Goal for the rest of the week is basically to keep it that way! Woot!

Start of week seven... [08 Dec 2005|06:58am]

Hi. Ending week six. Didn't reach my goal, but I still lost a pound.

I've gotten to the point in my diet where I've stopped tracking because I know how much everything is going to cost. It's weird really. We don't order out as much as we used to which is a good thing, but it seems I'm purchasing food every other day. When you switch to eating nothing but veggies and fruit or things that can go bad very quickly it feels as though you hang out at the supermarket way too much.

People at Trader Joes know me by name.

The goal for next month is to leave 300.

Update: Weight Watcher's Craze [24 Nov 2005|10:47am]

[ mood | okay ]

It’s been a very long time since I’ve actually written in this community mostly because I haven’t really been following any weight lose program until recently. The truth of the matter was that my motivation just didn’t stick by and once that was gone it was back to the same old unhealthy habits of sitting around my couch consuming tubs of ice cream.

Since my move to Seattle, I’ve put on quite a bit of weight. Leaving Texas in the year of 2000, I would say I was about 220 pounds give or take 10 pounds. By the time I got here, a year later I was up to the 330 pound mark and I simply stayed in that place for as long as 4 years.

As a result of my apathy, I was recently diagnosed with Type II diabetes. My thyroid sky rocketed from a steady level to one that has grown five times as high over the course of a year. I also spent the night at the most uncomfortable hospital because of a heart attack scare that turned out to be a false alarm.

That year I also lost my grandmother who I am still angry at for dying. I believe she committed a slow suicide caused by the same apathy that I have been displaying lately. With as many opportunities as she had to improve her life, she didn’t take them and I realized that I was playing the same deck of cards that she had been. The difference between my grandmother and I is that I don’t want to die.

I finally have gotten to the point in my life where I absolutely have no choice. If I want to live and be healthy, then I need to do something with myself that is not only going to work, but will keep me consistent. I didn’t want a fad diet that will help me lose all the weight in the world only to double it within a year. I didn’t want to restrict myself from not eating anything, because the worse thing about dieting is the depression. I have tons of that too.

One of the things I wanted to look into was Weight Watchers. Ironically, it was one of the programs my grandmother started on when she was younger and I remembered seeing old handouts from the 80s that described what this diet was like. It had given the impression of restrictions, which is what I didn’t want. I understood the common sense concept of portions, but I never appreciated restrictions one bit. However, weight watcher since then has gone a long way. I decided to take the first step and purchase that At Home program.

I started this program on October 27th. It’s a 12 week program (though you can take it further than 12 weeks) and they have two options that will suit your preference. As of today, I’ve lost 14 pounds. Some people might not see that as significant, but the truth is that every bit counts. I’ve gone from 330 a few years ago to 303. Those pounds being taken off my body made it so I can walk a little further without sounding like I’m about to die. The healthier you eat, the little bit you lose will help you get energized.

And even though I’m progressing as I am, there’s still an underlining frustration that comes with temptation. Sure I shouldn’t eat that chocolate cake at all, but deleting great high calorie foods from your life simply sucks. It’s the same issues that some people have when they have gastric bypass surgery. There are things they simply CAN NOT EAT. People become resentful when it happens. That’s part of my experiences though that diet. But as my friend Sylvia always says, “Sometimes you need to make sacrifices to get what you want.” I’m sure than when I get to a goaled weight I can eat some of these foods with a better idea of how much and how often.

All in all, I do recommend Weight Watchers as a step in the right and safe direction. If you’re expecting instant 20 pound weight loss in a week types of program, this isn’t for you. It’s one of the safest ways to lose weight. As long as you eat by your point level and exercise you will definitely see some results.

So here is my progress so far.
Starting weight is 317.5. 10% Target is 32 pounds in 12 weeks.
Ultimate Weight Goal is 285.5.

Weeks Weight Lose/Gain from Previous Week Total Loss/Gain
 1 313.6 -3.9 -3.9
 2 311.4 -2.2 -6.1
 3 309.8 -1.6 -7.7
 4 303.4 -6.4 -14.1

Hey everyone!

I read a post on Pilates and I have the Windsor Pilates videos too. I love them!! My problem is that I am having motivaiton problems. I've just been too tired to work out lately. I have 10 lbs that I am trying to loose. I joined this group to help me get back on track! It always helps to have people to talk to to keep you motivated!

Winsor Pilates [16 Jul 2004|02:22am]

[ mood | happy ]

For the last week and five days, I've been seriously working on my exercise, doing Pilates and a bit of Dance Dance Revolution, a game that really gets a person moving.

But with Pilates, I've noticed a big difference in my body even after just a week and five days. For example, I'm a lot more flexible than I was to begin with. I can touch my toes, when before, I could barely reach passed my knees and my stomach is a lot stronger. I can actually do sit ups now (with my hands behind my head) without having anyone hold my feet down (thought they do lift up a little, as to be expected at this point).

But this, for me, is really motivating. It means that I'm doing something right and I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the exercising but I have lost six pounds in the last two weeks or so and if it continues, I'll know Pilates is helping out in that respect.

As for Dance Dance Revolution, if you want to work up a good sweat and you have a Playstation or a Playstation 2, I really recommend this game. I have the game pads at home, which you can buy online or at a game store, usually, and they plug into my station just as a controller would. It's really fun and challenging at the same time. It's great!

These are my updates, so far. I'll continue to post the changes Pilates has with me over the next few weeks.

Two months at the gym [25 May 2004|08:56pm]

I just paid for the beginning of our third month at the gym. I am so happy with my progress as far as the gym goes. My endurance has definitely increased and I can trot up stairs and go across campus without getting winded. That's a good thing. Still having diet and nutritional woes - if anyone is interested take a look at my personal page - I'm like a nutritional bi-polar or something. Not to worry, today was great and it will get better. I know I have control over what I do. BTW, this is day 12 of my personal challenge. If anything, this is helping me stay focused. Oh, I never updated my weigh in. A 20lb loss would put me at 200 on the scale at work and 190 on my scale at home. We shall see. . .

Summertime [13 May 2004|06:46pm]

Hi everyone!
I'm beginning a 100 day health challenge to get a jump on the summer and lasting through most of the summer. Is anyone else game? I am still doing great with the gym, but my eating habits still haunt me. This challenge (for me) would be daily exercise, a food journal, photos of my progress to motivate me along the way, special time for me (relaxation, shopping, massage, whatever...). My goal for this time period is 20 lbs, or two jeans sizes (either one would do). I'll post my current weight in the morning -
I challenge anyone else who wants to do this - join me!!!

One Month [28 Apr 2004|09:40pm]

[ mood | tired ]

Hubby and I have been going to the gym for 1 month. I asked the receptionist if she would count how many times I have been this month and it was 15 times! I was so surprised - that is like every other day!!! I actually had no idea - I thought it would be like once every three or four days. I've worked up to 40 minutes on the elliptical trainer at a moderate pace. I've been avoiding the scale, but I'm feeling good so that is what counts. Also, as a follow-up to my previous post on overeating - I've been doing much better. Thanks for your tips and encouragement. I also told my husband - he is so supportive and understanding - he really helps to boost me up when I'm feeling down :)

Weekly weigh-in [24 Apr 2004|11:30am]

I'm down 2.6 for the week, placing me at 221.2 . Yesterday I was able to start pulling some of my size 20's up and down without unbuttoning them. These are the stretchy kind though. So we'll see. Still working at it. Sometimes it just takes making a smart choice. You know? If you're going to splurge, eat half of what you might normally eat for a dessert, or eat healthy things en lieu of the sweets. One day at a time folks. One day at a time. :)

What to do? [22 Apr 2004|12:49pm]

[ mood | indifferent ]

Does anyone else have a problem with binging? I go through this about once per month or six weeks or so - could be hormonal...could be stress related, either way - I'm tired of making excuses for myself on this because it leaves me feeling horrible about myself and my habits. This week I have had fast food french fries three times after not having had any for like 6 or 9 months, potato chips, also chocolate (which I do allow myself to have) but this week it has been cheap candy bars and brownies. What the heck!?! I don't know what is going on with my cravings(not pregnant). I have noticed that my appetite has been greater since joining the gym, but I've also increase fruit and raw veggie choices in my fridge. I also have a tendency to hide my food binging from others - I eat all these 'bad' foods when I am alone - I'm worried about people judging me for my bad food choices. When I say 'binging' - it is more related to the type of food than the amount at one time. Although I'd like to eat three candy bars at one time, even I have not gone that far. For example, the normal-appetite-me might have a cookie with my low fat Subway sandwich once in a three day period. The binging-appetite-me has had two candy bars, two brownies, and the afore mentioned french fries in a three day period. I feel gross - I have to stop this now or I will feel even worse. I know how to eat healthy, that is not the problem - I have studied it alot. The issue is when I feel like I lose control over my actions-the crazy thing is, I know what I'm doing, I know how I will feel afterwards, but I do it anyway. Weird.

More steps! [17 Apr 2004|01:15pm]

At weigh-in today, the scales said I lost 4.2 pounds. This places me at 223.8 - at my ten percent goal. :) I was given a key ring for my success, and as I couldn't stay for today's meeting I was asked to come back to one during the week, so we could properly celebrate my success! :)

And now? Now I nap. ;)

[14 Apr 2004|07:48pm]
I really wanted to get opinions from other dieters... I've been dieting AND exercising for a month now. I went to being sedentary to exercising 6 days a week and I have STUCK WITH IT religiously for a month. I've only had two diet mishaps since I've started. I've been counting calories (1200 a day) and fat grams.

I'm so frustrated, almost to the point of crying over it, and I'm not one to cry. I'm just so tired of trying so hard and seeing NO RESULT.

I'm not about to give up, because I really want to lose the weight, but I was wondering if someone could take a look at my journal (this is my diet journal - thenewrachael) and see if there's something I could do to improve or maybe move things along a little faster.

It just seems that since I have SO much weight to lose that it would come off faster, but it's not. I'd be happy with 1-2 lbs a week, but I'm not even seeing that really.
